King County – Washington State: Lack of Recovery in public mental health systems
Why is lack of recovery important?
First of all, we are talking about a health system. If we are talking about health, then we should know if the system is producing health or not. The annual reports from the original King County Wellness Ordinance showed that far less than 1% recover, a very small 6% percent show any improvement and the vast majority are simply being warehoused in a state of disability – dependent on the taxpayers – apparently for life. This comes at a high cost. This cost is losing the production of these fellow citizens. The cost to the families of loved ones who languish in disability and despair.
However, despite its outward support of the recovery model, the King County system’s own outcome reports and publications, as well as additional information obtained through public disclosure requests, suggest that its primary goal, what it strives to achieve, is not recovery but warehousing. To borrow the language of the NFC, the King County mental health system is managing symptoms and accepting long term disability
This brings us back to recovery – or rather lack of and a look at the role current treatments play in creating long term disability and dependence. And also a look at alternatives, what can and is being done by people who escape the system and act in time to avoid being trapped in public mental health.
